Trauma: MAC

This is the inside of my PowerBook, guts exposed like a patient on the Discovery Health Channel’s “Trauma: ER.” What on earth possessed me do such a thing to my Mac? Well, let’s blame it mostly on Delta Airlines, and partly on the broken latch that closes the laptop. I guess I can blame it partly on myself, too… now I know to never pack my laptop in my check-in baggage. Hey, it was a long flight…my brain was fried…I was delirious and had tons of carry on souvenirs…but I digress. Read more

An Apple a day

I am a die-hard Mac user. Sure, my bank account isn’t too happy about it, but the machines are incredible. For all of my Mac friends, if you haven’t see the new Apple ads, they are definitely worth checking out.

Picture 1.pngMy favorite line so far is from Out of the Box: “…actually, the rest of me is in some other boxes…I’ll catch up with you later.”

I’ve been Haacked…and I like it

I just wanted to give a quick thanks to partner-in-crime Phil Haack, check out his blog here. Since Phil, CTO of VelocIT, added a link from his blog to my VelocIT logo case study (see below), traffic here has gone up considerably. It’s my first big traffic spike!

I had the opportunity of working with VelocIT and Shepard Associates on two DNN managed websites (Essure.com and Essuremd.com) for Conceptus, Inc. We were responsible for developing a CMS using DotNetNuke and CSS to style the layout. The project was a great learning experience for all of us, and resulted in an exceptional product for the client.

Step away from the computer…

This is a recent drawing of a little girl at an outdoor theater performance in Mexico. The show was at night, and at one point all the lights were out, and everyone was holding a small candle. I turned around and caught this little girls eye with my camera, and had to turn it into a charcoal and pencil drawing.

logo01.gifThe idea is formed. The business plan is written. The client list looks good. You’ve got great business partners. It’s time to open shop!

Every business owner knows they need a logo, but not many realize the importance of a great logo. It’s all about presentation, and an expertly designed logo is part of that great first impression every business person wants to make to the next potential client.

The logo for VelocIT was a designer’s dream project. CEO Micah Dylan speaks the language of design and understands the importance of identity. He also had a vision, and being fluent in the language of art and design helped him communicate it. Read more

kay-la handbags etc: A study in funky design

Filed Under Websites | Leave a Comment

kay-la handbags etc
I just finished a website for kay-la handbags, etc. Kay-la is located in Hammond, La. and carries a great line of designer bags. Stop by “The ‘K’ List” to see what celebrities are carrying Kayla’s bags!

The site is designed using CSS, no tables in this puppy. A lot of hard work went into working with Kayla Morgan (Owner, Creative Director and Designer) to get the design looking just right. She needed the right mix of funky, eclectic and fun. Visiting the site feels like you are stepping into Kayla’s living room…or her head!

Why a design blog instead of a portfolio site?

Filed Under Writing | Leave a Comment

One of the strengths of the internet: it is a very fluid medium of expression. If I would have built myself a website one or two years ago, it would have been a flashy, all-out portfolio site, itself being an example of my work. But the times they are a’ changin’. Just look at something like MySpace. Who woulda thunk it? You can message people, post videos and pictures, and share your personality with your friends, and meet new people in the process. You logon and have a set of friends that you don’t email, but you meet in this other “space” on the internet. It’s a step up in the process of communicating over the internet. As is a design blog, and here’s why.

fluid1.jpgI’ve been toying with the idea of a design blog for quite some time. I initially wanted to have it be an extension of my portfolio site, letting it be a place where I could write articles about design and web production. There is a new trend emerging where designers are combining blogs with their portfolio sites, making it into one seamless website that showcases their design as well as their communication skills…and everyone in this business knows that communication skills are as important (if not more so!) than design skills.

So what’s the point? This design blog will hopefully allow me the ability to showcase my work as well as my design skills, giving clients a glimpse of how I might work with them to communicate their message visually, as well as how I will communicate as a contract employee. Plus, I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and that talent gets showcased as well. As an added bonus, updating a blog is a heckuva lot easier than updating a website. You just post it and there it is.

I think it will be a wonderful promotion tool. It becomes more of a newsletter, a site people will visit often because the content is always new and fresh, as is the idea. I would love to hear your thoughts about it. ~ Jon
